Happiness is all in your mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville 2014

Simple, profound truths are the realm of this Buddhist nun. Her message? The gift of happiness truly lies within our own hearts and minds. Gen Kelsang Nyema, exuding a peacefulness that immediately connects with the audience, starts by asking three questions: Are you having a good day? Why? Tomorrow, would you rather have a good day or a bad day? She teaches that we cannot put our happiness at the whim of other people and of circumstances. If we want to be happy, we have to "stop outsourcing our happiness to other people" and cultivate a source of inner peace. What happens next is quite astounding. The whole crowd of 350+ people proceeds to meditate with Nyema. There's a little squirming at first, but as she leads the audience through a calm citation of how to rest the mind, audience members feel a collective relaxation flow into the room and through the people. Fascinating! Refreshing.

Points to note

1. Need to stop outsourcing our happiness.

2. Actively cultivate a source of peace and happiness from inside.

3. Happiness and unhappiness are both states of mind, therefore, their real cause can't be found outside the mind.

It is not what happens to us but how we react to it that creates happiness and unhappiness.

How to Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals | Stephen Duneier | TEDxTucson

How you define Stephen Duneier depends on how you came to know him. Some define him as an expert institutional investor, while others know him as a large scale installation artist, avid outdoorsman, professor, decision strategist, coach, business leader, mindfulness extremist, author, speaker, daredevil or Guinness world record holder. In his talk, Stephen explains that what truly defines him aren't titles, but an approach to decision making that transformed him from someone who struggled with simple tasks to a guy who is continuously achieving even his most ambitious dreams.

For thirty years, he has applied cognitive science to investing, business and life. The result has been the turnaround of numerous institutional businesses, career best returns for managers who have adopted his methods, the development of a $1.25 billion dollar hedge fund and a rapidly shrinking bucket list.
Mr. Duneier teaches graduate courses on Decision Analysis in UCSB’s College of Engineering. His book, AlphaBrain is due for release in early 2017 from Wiley & Sons.
Through Bija Advisors, he helps business leaders improve performance by applying proven, proprietary decision-making methods to their own processes.
His artwork has been featured around the world and is represented by the Sullivan Goss Gallery. As Commissioner of the League of Professional Educators, Duneier is using cognitive science to alter the landscape of American education. He is the former Head of Currency Option Trading at Bank of America and Emerging Markets at AIG International.

The hindrances along the way to self-discovery and personal growth are easy to overcome. Learn how from his talk. For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. His strength is the ability to smoothly combine this knowledge with physical exercises and to practice Martial art –Kung Fu and Qi Gong. 5 Hindrances to Self-Mastery

1. Sensual desire (sight/touch/taste/smell/hearing) = Am I addicted?

2. Ill will / aversion = Am I feeling a negative emotion?

3. Dullness / heaviness = Am I unmotivated?

4. Restlessness = Is my mind jumping from though to thought?

5. Sceptical doubt = Am I indecisive?

Rain (is the solution)

Recognise which one you're experiencing

Accept that's what you're experiencing

Investigate why you're experiencing it

Non-identify with that experience: 'i am not the body, i am not the mind, i am not my emotion'

The secret to self control | Jonathan Bricker | TEDxRainier

Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.

-Abraham Lincoln

Jonathan Bricker's work has uncovered a scientifically sound approach to behavior change that is twice as effective as most currently practiced methods.  His new methods are driving new norms and new apps for how people quit smoking and decrease obesity, saving many people from an early death.

Jonathan Bricker is an internationally recognized scientific leader in a bold approach called acceptance and commitment therapy. A Stanford researcher called his use of the approach “a breakthrough in behavioral research [that] has major public health implications for the major causes of preventable death.” Bricker and his team, having received $10 million in total federal research grants to study this topic, are rigorously testing this intervention on multiple platforms, including smartphone apps, websites, and telephone coaching. His SmartQuit app for quitting smoking was recently launched and is now in distribution worldwide.

1) Be aware of the cravings whenever they appear, detect them and think "I'm feeling I'm having a craving for X."

2) Don't fight it. Let the craving rest in your brain and be conscious of it

3) Instead of shaming yourself for giving in to a craving, tell to yourself what you'd say to a friend of yours who's had a slip up.

How to learn any language in six months | Chris Lonsdale | TEDxLingnanUn...

Chris Lonsdale is Managing Director of Chris Lonsdale & Associates, a company established to catalyse breakthrough performance for individuals and senior teams. In addition, he has also developed a unique and integrated approach to learning that gives people the means to acquire language or complex technical knowledge in short periods of time

5 Principles of Rapid Language Acquisition:

1. Focus on language content that is relevant to you

2. Use Your New Language as a Tool to Communicate from the very start

3. Understand then acquire the language Unconsciously  (Comprehensive Input Approach)

4. Do Physiological Training, learn how to pronounce the words that you would need

5. Express your psycho-physiological state and avoid getting overwhelmed

7 Actions for Rapid Language Acquisition:

1. Listen a lot, the tones, pronunciations, other auditory clues

2. Focus on getting the meaning first, for some reason swear words are easily learned more than the important words, just a personal observation

3. Start mixing the words you learn, formula for 1000 phrases = (10 verbs)(10 nouns)(10 pronouns)

4. Focus on the core words, around 3000 words will allow you to speak almost 98% of the language (know what phrases to say, then the pronouns+common verbs + adjectives, lastly glue or combine what you've learned previously)

5. Get a language parent aka a native speaker who: 1) works to understand what you want to say 2)tolerates your mistakes in speech and grammar 3) affirmatively shows he/she understands what you are trying to say correctly 4) matches your vocabulary level when you speak to each other

6. Copy their facial expression when they say words and phrases and if they are not present practice with a visual aid

7. Directly connect words to mental images, for example when you try to remember "fire" in the language, visualize it as well.

What Is Your Mental Age? (Quick Test)

For millions of people around the world, their biological and their emotional age are two completely different things. Here is an easy but very accurate test that will determine your mental age.

RULES
The rules are simple: answer the question of picking the first thing that comes to your mind. Seriously, do not overthink. If you get 9 as your mental age, it does not mean your IQ is low; it only shows your perception of the world is young and bright. If you get 60 while you are 22, it’s not too bad either. It just means you are really wise.
For each answer, you pick, add a certain number of points. You get 1 point for each time you choose number 1 option; you get 2 points for option 2, and so on. There will be 4 options for each question.

9 Brain Exercises to Strengthen Your Mind

SUMMARY: - #1. Repeat this exercise 15 times. Your breathing should be a bit faster than usual. The most important thing is to do the exercise smoothly and not to hurry. Try not to lower your hands, and coordinate your movements and breathing. - #2. Repeat each movement at least 10 times. Your breathing should be rhythmical, and your fingers should be spread as much as possible. - #3. Repeat these movements at least 10 times. Make sure you bend and straighten each finger thoroughly and completely. - #4. When the brain ages, your memory, attention span, and concentration weaken. Luckily, this finger workout can help you deal with this problem. The following exercises will help you improve your memory. - #5. First of all, tightly press together the fingertips of your thumb and index finger on your right hand. You should slightly curve the uppermost part of your index finger. Repeat this exercise 20 times for each hand. - #6. With the fingertip of the thumb on your right hand, press down on the bottom of your right index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky in turn. You should apply effort to do this exercise. After you repeat this motion 20 times, do the same for your left hand. - #7. As you've probably understood, your brain is tightly connected to your hands. Since most people have one dominant hand, the brain hemisphere connected to this hand is more developed than the other one. Thus, lefties have a more active right hemisphere, and right-handed people enjoy a more developed left hemisphere. To activate both hemispheres, you can try the following exercises. - #8. Try to perform everyday activities like brushing your teeth, eating, opening doors, or writing with the help of your nondominant hand. This can develop new connections between the 2 hemispheres of your brain and encourage the activity of the less vigorous hemisphere. - #9. Start to write by hand more. This activity provides perfect brain stimulation and improves neuroplasticity. Specialists recommend this method to patients who suffer from memory issues or dementia.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Summary

Become more effective, follow the 7 habits. This is an overview of the great book by Stephen Covey.

The 7 habits of highly effective people summary:

This book, the 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey, has touched millions of people's lives – it's one of, if not THE, most well know success books out there. There are literally 1000's of success books out there, so why should this one be any different? Stephen Covey researched the last 200 years of success literature and found something interesting.. In the last 50 years, most of the books have been focused on the personality ethic - Things like public image, how you dress, how you perform in social interactions, positive mental attitude, skills and techniques to get people to behave in certain ways. These books focus on how to appear rather than how to actually be.

The 7 habits of highly effective people takes an inside out approach – it focuses on the character ethic rather than the personality ethic.

1 - be proactive
2 - begin with the end in mind
3 - put first things first
4 - think win win
5 - seek first to understand then to be understood
6 - synergy
7 - sharpen the saw

In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals — including embracing failure. "The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most," Grant says.
