How to motivate yourself to change your behavior | Tali Sharot | TEDxCam...
What does make us change our actions? Tali Sharot reveals three ingredients to doing what's good for yourself.
Dr. Tali Sharot is a neuroscientist at University College London and the director of the Affective Brain Lab. She is a faculty member of the department of Experimental Psychology, a Wellcome Trust Fellow, and currently a visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on how emotion, motivation, and social factors influence our expectations, decisions, and memories.
She talks about motivation.
1. Social incentive- we are motivated through the positive actions of others. Ex. If we see our friend post a picture of themself at the gym then we want to do the same.
2. Progress monitoring- We are motivated by seeing progress. Ex. If we start working out too and we see progress by weighing ourself then that helps motivate us to continue.
3. Immediate Reward- reward your good behavior. Ex. If i workout this whole week then I will treat myself over the weekend. Maybe some pizza or ice cream

Ho'oponopono: The Hawaiian Forgiveness Ritual as the Key to Your Life's Fulfillment
What is Ho'oponopono
Have you heard of the Hawaiian therapist who cured an entire ward of criminally insane patients?
The therapist was Dr Ihaleakala Hew Len and he used Ho'oponopono to do it.
Ho'oponopono is a hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. It translates into english simply as correction.
The secret is there is no such thing as “out there” – everything happens to you in your mind. Everything you see, everything you hear, every person you meet, you experience in your mind. You only think it’s “out there” and you think that absolves you of responsibility.
In fact it’s quite the opposite: you are responsible for everything you think, and everything that comes to your attention. If you watch the news, everything you hear on the news is your responsibility. That sounds harsh, but it means that you are also able to clear it, clean it, and through forgiveness change it.
Dr Len's had an idea of 100% responsibility. If one would take complete responsibility for one's life, then everything one sees, hears, tastes, touches, or in any way experiences would be one's responsibility because it is in one's life..The problem would not be with our external reality, it would be with ourselves. Total Responsibility, according to Hew Len, advocates that everything exists as a projection from inside the human being.
So how can I use Ho'oponopono
The main objective of Hoʻoponopono is getting to the "zero state — it's where we have zero limits.
"To reach this state (which Dr Len called 'SITH - Self-I-Dentity through Ho'oponopono') you can start by repeating the following mantra:
"I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you."
It is a simple four step process.
Step 1: Repentance – I’M SORRY
Say "I'm sorry".The first step is to realise you are responsible for everything in your mind, even if it seems to be outside. Once you realise this it is very natural to feel sorry for all the troubles in the world. You can start by saying sorry for something you have caused yourself e.g. addiction to alcohol or smoking or being overweight or a lack of confidence or health issues. You could also say I realize that I am responsible for the issues(s) in my life and I feel remorse that my consciousness has allowed this.
Step 2: Ask Forgiveness - PLEASE FORGIVE ME
Say "PLEASE FORGIVE ME". It doesn't matter who you are asking. Just ask! . Repeat and mean what you say and be aware of the repentance from step 1.
Step 3: Gratitude - THANK YOU
Say “THANK YOU”. It is not important to whom or for what you are thanking. Thank various things. Thank your body for all it does for you. Thank yourself for being the best you can be. Thank God./a higher power/ the universe. Thank whatever it was that just forgave you. Just keep saying THANK YOU. There is amazing power in gratitude and thanking.
Step 4: Love - I LOVE YOU
Say I LOVE YOU. Say it to your body, say it to God/a higher power/the universe.. Say I LOVE YOU to everything around you. The world , your environment, your home, the people around you, your successes and your challengers. Repeat it and mean it. Feel it.
If this reasonates with you, here are some further resources to develop your understanding of this.

How To Be Successful In Life - The Underlying Principles of Success
Everyone wants to achieve the highest level of success. However, reaching that desirable level of success is not as easy as most of us perceive. To be successful, you have to sacrifice and forego majority of life's pleasures. Below is a list of seven guaranteed ways to be successful in life.
1. Do what you love
Unfortunately, most of us end up settling for jobs or careers that do not offer maximum satisfaction. Put simply, it is important to understand your passion and pursue it with all your energy and resources. The greatest regret held by a majority of the elderly is settling for what they did not love. To avoid having regrets on most of your early life decisions, be sure to pursue your passion. Doing what you love will ensure you remain passionate and highly motivated in your day to day activities regardless of the income. Be sure to discover your true purpose and work hard to achieve your goals.
2. Identify with a successful individual
As you look to achieve your dreams and initially set goals, ensure you remember that success has no secret recipe. It is advisable to identify with a successful person in your field of interest, and do whatever your mentor does to achieve his or her level of success. Once you have a role model or a mentor you associate with, it becomes easier to emulate the positive traits while learning from your mentor`s mistakes. Pick up the positive habits and ensure you avoid the mistakes made by your role model. By emulating a successful person, you increase your chances of succeeding exponentially.
3. Anticipate failure of disappointment
Good things never come easy, and if they do, then they probably won't last. Do not anticipate a smooth sailing in your journey to success. Instead, be ready to pick yourself up whenever you experience failure or disappointment. After all, successful people are characterized by their ability to remain hopeful even in their greatest disappointments. Therefore, regardless of how many times you fail, ensure you remain optimistic and confident in your ability to succeed.
4. Practice makes perfect
No one can succeed without commitment and adequate practice. To achieve the highest level of success in your respective field, it is necessary to take your time to practice until your skills become flawless. Contrary to popular belief, success is attained by maintaining a high level of consistency. Thus, to enjoy success, you must be willing to put time into strengthening your skills through constant practice.
5. Plan
Unfortunately, most of us assume that success happens overnight. However, success more often than not occurs as a result of adequate planning and organization. To achieve your set goals and targets, it is crucial to have a plan that will act as a guide. Successful people know what to do and when to do things; they just don't go about doing everything simultaneously. As a result, be sure to take your time and adequately plan for all your milestones. Set a schedule and observe it to the latter. Once you have a plan in place, it will be possible to measure your progress and consequently ensure that everything goes according to plan.
6. Be true to yourself
As you embark on your journey to success, it is necessary to understand that the biggest obstacle to success is yourself. Procrastination never helps; in fact, all it does is rob you off the time that you would otherwise utilize to achieve your goals. Therefore, ensure you are hard on yourself. That is, avoid procrastinating or letting yourself off the hook whenever you lack the motivation to do an important activity. Without self-discipline, it is impossible to achieve your set goals.
7. Enjoy the journey
Always keep in mind that everyone has an independent journey and purpose. Avoid comparing yourself to others as aimless comparisons can derail your development. Be patient and ensure you reward yourself every time you achieve your goals or initially set milestones. Indeed, it is only through self-love and appreciation that you can achieve the highest level of success. As such, give yourself treats and rewards that match your achievements. Remember, if you do not appreciate your achievements, no matter how small, then no one else will.

Good Days Or Bad Days
Ever had a bad day... a good one? Had more bad ones than good ones in a week or month? Had more good ones in a year than you feel you deserved? Dumb questions? Well, trust me I have a lot more, but I'll save them for another time but let me ask you two more... How do you define good and bad? And, in the end, which ones helped you grow, learn, become or contribute more to others? More dumb questions? I don't think so but I'm writing this article so the real answers are up to you, but I would ask you to finish reading before you decide on your answers. So here goes.
What's a good day?
So, today - you got a raise, didn't get a flat tire, had lunch with friends, had a wonderful date night with your spouse, got a text from your Doc. and he said you have a clean bill of health and the good stuff just kept on coming - all in all - a good day.
What's a bad day? You got bad news from your dentist, the AC in your car crashed, you lost your favorite - whatever - your kids got in trouble in school and yes, so much more.
So, let me ask you - who or what is in charge or in control of your day - you or the stuff that happens during the day? In other words, when good stuff happens you have a good day and when bad stuff happens, well it's a bad day. See where I'm going with this. If the stuff that happens determines whether your day is a good one or a bad one - you are not in control of your day - your day (the stuff that happens) is in control of you.
Here's the bigger problem - the same could be said of weeks, months or even years. Are you having a good year or a bad one? Are you having a good life or a bad one? I mean I could go on and on with this crap but I'm sure you have got it by now. All I'm asking is as you go through life, no matter how long or short it is or what happens or what doesn't or what you get or what you lose, etc. - who or what is in control?
My observations over the years having spoken on 25 countries and met thousands of people around the world is simply that the majority of people are not in control of their days, oh if you asked them all, they think they are and would say they are, but watch how they react or respond to the stuff that happens throughout the day or week, etc. and then ask yourself the simple question - who or what do you think is in control of their life? A better question is which is in control of your days/life?
Here's a thought - stop labeling your days as good or bad, just be glad you got another one cause do you know how many people die every day in this world - well it's over 150,000 - you weren't one of them today so - today is a good day?
Here's another thought - generally we learn little from the good days or good stuff that happens on what we call good days. It's the perceived bad days, events, situations, people or circumstances that we call or define as bad that often give us the greatest opportunities for faster growth, new learning, new creative ideas or solutions, and overall increased wisdom. So, consider that the bad days, in the end, might actually be better than the good days - what an amazing concept - but you might want to keep it to yourself as sharing it with others - well, they might think you have gone off the deep end.

Today - What If It Was Your Last One!
I know, the title might sound a bit morbid but think about it, today is the last day for over 7500 people who live in the US. Add other countries to the results - and the number is over 150,000. WOW - and one of these today - wasn't you! Over 6500 US citizens are currently turning 65 every day... are you one of them?
Well, if you are lucky someday you will be. So, where are you going with this article? That question after less than 15 seconds of your life is exactly the point I will try and make. So, to save some of your time so you don't have to read the entire article since I'm sure you have better or more important things to browse on your phone or computer... let's assume for a moment you don't have another tomorrow. Yes, you have had all of your yesterdays but today is your last day. Will you spend it on your device browsing Facebook, Twitter, etc.? Will you spend it in front of the TV watching your favorite sports team? Will you spend it working out at your local gym?
Will you spend it at work earning money that you will never get to spend? Stupid questions or assumptions? No - remember I said today is the last one you get here and then it's... Bye Bye.
So, I'll ask you one more time, how will you spend today if you knew it was your last one?
OK, now you can go back to whatever it was you were doing or want to do instead of reading. For everyone else, I would like you to consider a few basic premises. You can agree or disagree with any or all of them - your choice:
One - sooner or later we will be one of the above statistics - we are out of here.
Two - No one knows when, how or where it will end for them.
Three - You will leave here with some regrets and some unfinished business.
Four - It's only a matter of time before you and your life will no longer be at the forefront of other's lives you left behind.
Five - Where you are headed next will be related to how you lived while you were here.
Six - While here you touched some people in a positive way and others in a negative way.
Seven - On your last day you can't fix all the mistakes or failures you made while here.
Eight - You will never know what legacy you left behind you.
I'll let you come up with numbers nine and ten...
Nine -
Ten -
Life is short and fragile and it's unfortunate that far too many of us, and I include myself in this group, wait far too long to fix things, change things, do things, undo things, etc. And for many of us, we will never have that opportunity, so I would like to leave you with three quick thoughts: If you knew ahead of time you were leaving today - 1) what would you try and fix? 2)Who would you spend your time with and 3)
How would you spend your time with them?
Don't wait too long or put too much stuff off till later- none of us knows the when...

How to Create Your Best and Boost Your Productivity Using Accountability Buddies
Look how far you've come! More than ever, you prioritize and set boundaries. You have daily goals and you use your to-do list wisely.
And yet, you just know there's more time you'd like to claim for special projects. You procrastinate here and distract yourself there. Some time challenges are quite stubborn, after all! They don't just pack up and leave of their own accord.
Discouraged? Don't let it get you down! Instead, try joining forces with an accountability buddy. Scheduled check-ins can help you remain on course.
What support does an accountability buddy provide?

1. Identify your daily goals.
2. Establish how the two of you will check in - by phone, email, etc.

5. Keep within the agreed time frame. If speaking on the phone, a check-in may take up to 15 minutes total. An email check-in tends to be more brief.
6. Relate as a neutral listener to your buddy's check-in, and only volunteer feedback when specifically requested.
7. Remain on topic, using your time in a mindful and respectful way.
Can you envision how this might help you take that next step forward? Think of a task that remains stalled, and imagine how good it will feel to bring it to completion!

2. Establish how the two of you will check in - by phone, email, etc.
3. Identify for yourself the action steps needed to reach your goal.
4. Check in regularly, generally on a daily basis.
By relating with neutrality to a colleague and consistently reporting on your varying rate of progress, you build a strong base to generate still more Time Energy™. That's because you pull upon Adult strengths like persistence, problem-solving, and follow-through in situations you've avoided in the past.
There's an added benefit. Working with an accountability buddy helps you relate to your personal projects with more objectivity and perspective. And by combining self-reference with active listening, you enrich your time while boosting your effectiveness.
